Throughout my 15-year tenure in leading talent acquisition, I’ve developed the capacity to rapidly evaluate the credibility of a candidate’s educational background. When reviewing the South African bursary list on a CV, I’ve learned that some bursaries are far more than just a source of funding; they are signals.
These signal to me that the candidate has successfully navigated a competitive evaluation process, and therefore has displayed academic excellence, and/or leadership capability, and/or resilience, and/or an affinity to a particular industry sector, all of which are desirable characteristics that can lead to hiring a candidate who is less risky, and yet may deliver greater returns on that investment.
The following list is not simply a listing of available bursaries; rather, it represents a strategic portfolio, organized around types of students and career trajectories they serve. My assessment is based upon the caliber of students I’ve observed graduate from the various programs listed and the degree to which they have succeeded in the global job market.
I will provide examples of the signals I believe each bursary sends to recruiters such as myself, as well as the strategic thinking needed to be successful in competing for each.

The Strategist’s Application Framework
An indiscriminate approach to applying for bursaries wastes a candidate’s time and energy. An effective strategy requires focus.
- Perform a Self-Assessment: Identify whether you are a general-access candidate, a future corporate leader, a specialist in a particular field, or an elite scholar. Be truthful about your identity. Your energy will be best directed toward programs that fit your actual profile and your authentic story.
- Tailor Your Story: Your application for a corporate bursary like Sasol should be distinct from your application for a social-impact scholarship like Moshal. When applying for Sasol, you must highlight your problem-solving skills and your curiosity about technology to make it effective. When applying for Moshal, highlight your story of resilience and your contributions to your community.
- Identify the Funders’ Motives: Ask yourself, “Why do you think this organization awards bursaries?”
o Government: The primary motive of government is for social development and to promote equality of access to skills.
o Corporations: Corporations award bursaries primarily to develop their own talent pools, and to create a pipeline of researchers and developers.
o Foundations: Foundations award bursaries to support their mission-related goals (e.g., specific social issues).
If your application shows how awarding you a bursary will fulfill the mission of the funder, you are likely to be successful.
The Final Analysis
Do not view this list as a compilation of 30 random bursaries; instead, recognize that it represents a map of the possible ways to invest in education. Your task is to determine where your unique profile fits best (based on your grades, your story, your skills, and your aspirations).
Once you have done so, craft an application that articulates your candidacy with the same level of strategic sophistication that a professional uses when proposing a mutually beneficial partnership.
