In my role supporting graduate programs and talent acquisition across the EMEA region, I have reviewed thousands of resumes. The best ones show a similar aspect: they convey strategic thinking right from the start. It does not mean getting placed into a university immediately after matriculation is a dead end; it means it is a strategic pivot point. It gives you two options: idly wait or proactively construct a compelling alternative route. From the programs and candidates I have encountered during my recruitment activities, there are three possible funded routes.

  1. The TVET & Artisan Route: A Direct Route to High-Demand Careers

This is probably the least recognized strategic option. In my recruitment experiences working with major multinationals, we consistently experienced a severe shortage of qualified artisans and technicians. A TVET qualification is not an inferior option; it is a direct entry ticket to a high-demand profession.

Recruiter’s Perspective: A candidate with a TVET diploma and apprenticeship has demonstrated the ability to perform with hands-on skills, reliability, and a clear understanding of a specific industry, qualities that are immediately valuable.

NSFAS for TVET Colleges: NSFAS is your best resource for obtaining comprehensive funding for TVET qualifications.

SETA Bursaries (merSETA, AgriSETA): Sectoral SETAs are desperately seeking young people to join their ranks. Many of these SETAs offer paid learnerships to bursars, thus allowing them to both earn money while acquiring new skills. This is not just a source of funding; it represents the start of your career.

  1. The Corporate Bursary with Work-Back Option

Large corporations such as Shoprite, Sasol, and Transnet not only provide funding for students to attend university, but they also invest in future employees. These companies also typically have programs for matriculants that allow for on-the-job training combined with potential future study opportunities.

Recruiter’s Perspective: A candidate who has participated in a corporate program has been acculturated to the organization. They have knowledge of how the organization operates and have proven their work ethic. They are therefore less of a risk and more likely to yield returns for the employer.

Strategy: Treat this as a long-term career move; do not simply view this as a funding opportunity. Your application should reflect an appreciation of the business and a desire to be part of the corporation’s industry.

  1. The Strategic Gap Year: You Should Create a Compelling Story

A gap year is detrimental if it is spent doing nothing productive. On the other hand, a gap year can be highly beneficial if it is structured. Your objective is to construct a narrative of proactive skill development.

Practical Steps:

Pursue Low-Cost/No-Cost Certification: Certification from Google, Microsoft, or AWS does not cost anything and/or is a relatively inexpensive certification. While they are lines on a resume, they are also evidence of modern, relevant skills that I look for when recruiting for digital positions.

Secure a Structured Learnership: Organizations such as Harambee facilitate structured, funded work readiness programs for youth. This demonstrates initiative and allows you to obtain professional references.

Volunteer for Strategic Purposes: Volunteer for organizations where you can gain tangible skills (e.g., manage social media for an NGO; coordinate logistics for a charity event). This provides specific examples of what you are capable of accomplishing that you can reference in future job applications.

Applying for Funding Opportunities: How to Present Yourself

You must alter your mindset when applying for these funding opportunities. You are no longer a student requesting a handout; you are a future professional presenting an investment proposal.

TVET/SETA Scholarships: Your motivation should emphasize your practical abilities and your comprehension of the career progression within your chosen trade. Demonstrate to the funder that you have researched the trade and are intentionally selecting a career path.

Corporate Bursaries: Align your application with the corporation’s commercial requirements. If the corporation is a retailer, explain why you would excel in a customer-facing position; if the corporation is an engineering firm, describe how you solve problems. Explain to them why you envision a future with their company.

Gap Year Programs: Your application must portray a sense of intentionality. What particular skills are you attempting to acquire? How will the current year improve and increase your candidacy for future educational or employment opportunities? Lack of clarity regarding your goals will negatively impact your chances of receiving funding.

Final Analysis: You Create Your Own Path

Successful careers are created by individuals who take thoughtful, decisive actions at the most important points in their lives. A university degree may be one path; however, it is not the only path. A funded TVET certification, a corporate learnership, or a certified gap year can provide a foundation for success that is equally, if not more so, as readily applicable in the job market as a university degree.

Do not concentrate on the apparent single barrier to entry. Concentrate on the multiple doors that are open to you. Select the one that aligns with your strengths and aspirations, and aggressively pursue it with the same level of dedication as you would your own career. That is the type of profile that attracts funding and leads to a fulfilling career.
