Becoming a millionaire is not as simple as holding a specific job. Becoming wealthy is much more about having a high income, strategically managing your finances, and taking a calculated risk as an entrepreneur. In this guide, I will explore the top 10 wealth-building jobs individuals pursue to earn a fortune.
My experience recruiting and coaching top professionals at top firms has shown me that there are a limited number of fields where opportunities exist for people to create wealth. Typically, these fields provide a high ceiling for income generation through salary, equity, or business ownership.
It’s essential to view wealth-building realistically. While these jobs may have the potential for high incomes, they also demand a level of education and expertise beyond what most people can achieve. They will also require a high amount of hard work and, sometimes, a degree of luck.
Here is a practical look at the top ten types of wealth-building jobs that have been used historically to build wealth, although each requires a commitment to a challenging career:
-
Specialist Physician or Surgeon
Specialists who are orthopedic surgeons, cardiologists, and anesthesiologists are among the highest-paid medical professionals because of the extended education required to become a specialist physician and the high-stress, critical role they play in the delivery of patient care.
Reality: The path to becoming a specialist physician/surgeon requires a tremendous amount of time and money to become educated (usually 10-15 years of schooling after completing high school). In addition, a large portion of students graduating from medical school are saddled with a large amount of educational debt.
Wealth-Building Path: Physicians/surgeons have the opportunity to aggressively repay educational debt while accumulating wealth throughout their career, especially when they own a portion of a private practice.
Key Traits: Extremely diligent, extremely patient, and extremely resilient to the stress of providing care in a high-pressure environment.
-
Software Engineer at a Top Tech Firm or One of the FAANG Companies
Senior software developers at companies such as Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon, Netflix, and Microsoft can accumulate wealth quickly because of both their high salaries and the wealth-generating power of the stock grants provided by these companies.
Reality: There are only a few spots available for new hires at the largest tech companies, and competing for these positions is difficult. These individuals need to be experts in a small number of programming languages/systems, and they must continually update their expertise to remain competitive.
Wealth-Building Path: Wealth can be accumulated quickly through stock grants (RSU) or stock options granted by the company. Additionally, senior developers can leave their employment and start their own company, creating a new source of wealth through either additional stock or by selling their company.
Key Traits: Passionate about continued learning, passionate about problem-solving, and willing to continue to improve themselves professionally.
-
Investment Banker/Private Equity Associate
Investment bankers and private equity associates help large corporations facilitate mergers and acquisitions, and assist investors in purchasing shares of companies through initial public offerings (IPO).
Reality: Working as an investment banker/private equity associate is a stressful, physically and emotionally draining profession that requires working long hours for several years before achieving success.
Wealth-Building Path: Both investment bankers and private equity associates receive high salaries plus bonuses. The bonuses are typically higher than their salaries and are directly related to how well the individual performs on their assignments.
Those who perform extremely well in the field have the potential to move into the more lucrative world of private equity, where they can be compensated tens of millions of dollars per year through carried interest (a percentage of the profits earned by the fund).
Key Traits: Highly resilient, able to solve complex problems, and willing to put in long hours.
-
Successful Entrepreneur/Startup Founder
Entrepreneurs are individuals who create their own opportunities. Creating a successful business provides many opportunities for business owners to create wealth.
Reality: Being a successful entrepreneur is extremely difficult. Most businesses fail within the first two to three years of operation. To successfully create a business, an entrepreneur needs a solid idea, excellent execution, the ability to lead others, and the ability to obtain sufficient funding and resources.
Wealth-Building Path: Entrepreneurs build wealth through the ownership of their businesses. If their business is successful enough to grow and eventually sell, the entrepreneur(s) will receive a large sum of money upon the sale of the company (known as an exit).
The same is true if their business grows to the point of needing outside funding, and they are able to sell the business to another company.
Key Traits: Possess a clear vision for the future, are extremely determined, take risks, and possess leadership qualities.
-
Corporate Lawyer (Partner at Big Law Firm)
Corporate lawyers represent major companies in large transactions and litigation.
Reality: To advance to the rank of partner in a large corporate law firm, an attorney must endure a grueling seven-to-ten-year “up or out” process that includes working long hours during the week and weekends, as well as developing business relationships to drive client acquisition.
Wealth-Building Path: Attorneys do not receive equity until they are promoted to partner in a big law firm. Once they reach this position, they begin to get a share of the profits generated by the firm, resulting in a salary of hundreds of thousands of dollars per year.
Key Traits: Analytically brilliant, extremely detail-oriented, and skilled at generating business.
-
Sales Executive in a High-Margin Field
Sales executives in high-margin industries such as enterprise software, medical devices, and pharmaceuticals can earn extraordinary amounts of money in commissions.
Reality: Sales executives are rewarded based on their performance, and therefore live and die by their ability to close sales. If they consistently fall short of their sales targets, they run the risk of losing their jobs.
Sales executives must develop the emotional strength to deal with the constant rejection they encounter in the course of their daily activities.
Wealth-Building Path: Sales executives earn commissions on the products/services they sell. Top closers in high-margin fields can easily exceed the salary of senior managers in their organization.
Key Traits: Persuasive, empathetic, persistent, and competitive.
-
Real Estate Developer
Real estate developers are entrepreneurs who oversee all aspects of acquiring land, designing buildings, securing funding, and constructing properties.
Reality: Developing properties is a difficult process that needs a lot of knowledge regarding the property development industry, as well as the ability to secure a significant amount of funding to complete construction projects.
Wealth-Building Path: Developers earn a spread, or a profit margin, between the price of acquiring the land and the price of the finished product. When completed, a developer may realize a significant profit from the sale of the property.

Wealth-Building Path: CRNAs earn a high salary and are able to build a stable, long-term career. CRNAs are also able to build wealth through their ability to save a portion of their income.
Key Traits: Remains calm under extreme pressure, meticulous in their delivery of care, and highly competent in their ability to provide care.

Professional in a Niche, High-Risk Trade
This is a non-traditional route to wealth creation; however, individuals who work as specialists in niche, high-risk trades have the opportunity to accumulate wealth.
Reality: Tradespeople who operate in high-risk trades must accept the possibility of injury, death, or serious illness. Additionally, tradespeople must have the ability to establish and grow a large and profitable business and manage the personnel and logistics necessary to support their operations.
Wealth-Building Path: Tradespeople earn wealth through the margins realized on their projects. By growing their businesses, they can earn more money than most salaried employees in their respective trades.
Key Traits: Expert in their technical field, possess business acumen to grow their business, and are effective leaders.
There are no shortcuts to building wealth. Regardless of the field you choose to pursue, there are common traits that successful wealth-builders exhibit:
- They are financially disciplined.
- They are able to delay immediate gratification.
- They are able to create and implement strategies to invest their income.
- They are able to avoid lifestyle inflation caused by increases in their income.
Pursuing a career simply because it has the potential to produce millionaire-level wealth is a recipe for burnout. Successful wealth-builders are those who are passionate about their work and are skilled at producing results in their chosen field.
